INTRODUCTION

Fund raising is an important component for the success of any organisation. Every organisation needs money to survive, to meet project costs and develop programmes for the future to pay the wages and salaries of its staff and to meet all the office and organizational overheads that are needed for organisation. The list of needs is endless. And the stark truth is that if the money is not raised, the organisation will not be able to do the work. If the work is not done, then all those pressing needs will remain unmet.

Fund raising is not just about money. It is also about number of supporters because each supporter is important. They can all be persuaded to give again and to give even more generously. They may be able to volunteer or to find friends who are willing to support you. These are indication of the level of support that your organisation is attracting, and therefore, can add strength to your lobbying and campaigning work.

Fund raising is not simply about generating the resources you need to survive from this year to next year, and planning for any expansion and development, it is also about helping to create viable and strong organisation which is able to sustain itself into the future. There are many ways of doing this. One way is to build a substantial and active donor base – getting people to support you who feel involved and important to the organisation and who will continue to give their support over a long period of time. Other ways include organising successful fund raising events (which can create a regular and continuing sources of income), creating capital within your organisation such as building and equipment’s (which reduce your need for running costs or can help you generate an income) or an endowment or corpus fund, and developing income generating schemes for the organisation itself. The Government of India through its various ministries provides funds to the NGOs across the country. The Government has also enacted a bill where it is mandatory for the corporate to utilize 2% of their profit under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

Fund raising is never easy. There is too little money to meet the demands of everyone who needs it and most of the times you ask you will be refused. Getting started is the first and most difficult step in fund raising. Like learning to swim of to ride a bicycle, fund raising becomes easier with experience. Once you have 25 supporters, it is a short step to increasing this to 100, and then to 250 and eventually perhaps to 1000. But finding the first 25 is a real challenge. But it becomes easier if you understand the fund raising process and if you learn whom to approach and how to ask. To enhance these skills amongst the young workers of voluntary organisations, we are very pleased to announce that Vishwa Yuvak Kendra is organizing a Training Programme on Fund Raising from 17 – 20 June, 2015.
