WHO ROAD SAFETY JOURNALISM FELLOWSHIP 2014
INTRODUCTION
The WHO Country Office for India invites applications for the WHO Road Safety Journalism Fellowship 2014, from journalists based in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, from Hindi, English and Telugu print and broadcast media. CMS is implementing the fellowship programme on behalf of WHO.
The objective of the fellowship programme is to strengthen journalists’ capacities to provide the much-needed boost to legislation, policies, programmes, systems, enforcements and awareness through informed reporting, thereby, effectively contributing to bringing down the number of deaths and injuries on Indian roads.
THE FELLOWSHIP
A total of 15 fellowships (eight fellows from New Delhi and seven fellows from Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam) will be awarded as a part of this programme.
The fellowship programme will be for four months (August – November 2014), and will include the following activities:
- Two workshops (Delhi and Hyderabad),
- 2 field visits (national), with a possibility of one of them being an international visit,
- Access to experts and support material on road safety,
- Mentoring for undertaking a research for producing an in-depth paper (optional), and
- A stipend up to Rs 1 lakh, aimed at supporting research activities
JOURNALIST ENGAGEMENT
· Fellows will be expected to produce a minimum of eight stories (for both print and broadcast media) during the fellowship programme with the support of their editors,
- Some amount of travel is necessary, as fellows will have to participate in two workshops and two field trips (10-12 days of travel during the whole fellowship period), apart from the independent field trips they may undertake for their stories, and
- Six to eight days in a month to be dedicated for research and stories.
Please note that the fellowship activities will be held in conjunction with the Fellows’ normal course of work.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?
- Journalists working for print and broadcast media
- Independent/freelance journalists on contract with an established, mainstream media outlet in India
This fellowship is only for individuals. Only journalists based in New Delhi, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam should apply. We welcome any number of applications from the same media house.
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants must submit the following items (zipped as one folder) to Ms Joselyn Joseph via email on joselyn@cmsindia.org by 25 July 2014. The subject line of your email should read: APPLICANT FULL NAME Application - WHO Road Safety Fellowship 2014. Shortlisted candidates will be notified via email.
- Updated CV (only containing information about relevant work experience, designations held, approximate number of reported stories published/aired, educational qualifications)
- An undertaking that, in the event of their selection, they will produce a letter of support from their respective editors/competent authorities, indicating their support during the fellowship. For freelance journalists, the letter must mention that they are on contract with an established, mainstream media outlet in India.
